In September 2013 The Bear took a trip back to the glamorous age of steam to create the video campaign to support Decca Records artist Alfie Boe’s new album. Set on an authentic stretch of beautifully restored Lancashire railway line, not far from Alfies home town of Fleetwood we were able to capture Alfies performance perfectly in this idyllic 1950’s atmosphere – A man on a journey back to his roots.
The full length video for lead track – “If You Go Away” finds Alfie transported back to the era of when rail travel was more refined. Our story follows Alfie reminiscing about a time where he had to deal with a loved one departing his life. We deliberately created a few narratives all running along side one another like trains passing on the tracks. Each story stopping just long enough for you to get a glimpse at what is happening, but never revealing the whole tale.
The video depicts a narrative between two young lovers saying an emotional goodbye on the platform edge. The rest of the story is left hanging for the viewer to decide, hinting that it’s a chapter from a book or simply a memory from Alfie’s own past.
The project was such a great one to conceive and direct as it was an amazing excuse for a crew of five grown men to play with trains and get to experience the golden age of steam travel – even if it only really ever existed on screen!
